Muslims?!

This gallery is the online representation of my body of work entitled Muslims?! I have photographed Canadian Muslims engaged in the ordinary and not so ordinary activities that are part of their daily lives. This exhibition illustrates that any label can only at best define a small part of a person’s identity, and seeks to break down stereotypes held by both Muslims and non-Muslims about what it means to be a Canadian Muslim.

Sana knows what she wants and does what it takes to get it. She’s competed on the world stage in Taekwon-do, finished her joint honours bachelors’ degree a year early, plays soccer, and is often the point person for community events. I hope my sons grow up with the same drive and initiative.

Farzana writes novels and practices psychotherapy, but not at the same time. She is the author of Stealing Nasreen and Six Metres of Pavement. Besides novels, she has written on social work and diversity-related topics, and provides private practice consulting and psychotherapy services. She is a co-curator of the Brockton Writers Series.

Ali is a Maritime-born, Quebecois-Pakistani chef, actor and comedian. He demonstrates an intimate knowledge of snow shovelling, original Starsky and Hutch episodes, and ice fishing. And lying. He’s never been ice fishing and can’t even remember which one is Starsky and which one is Hutch. But holy crap did he shovel a lot of snow.

Sajjad was introduced to me by my good friend Shiraz (the drummer in the back) who I’ve known since we were kids. Sajjad is a self taught keyboardist who has recently released his first CD of New Age Music, entitled ‘Where I Belong’.

Born in Algeria, Houria travelled to France in the 1970s to study psychology and went on to teach sociology.  Her musical career focuses on interpretations of the folk songs of her childhood. As Parul, Houria was part of the “Mystical Journey” tour.

Naz holds a Fine Arts degree from Byam Shaw School, with post-graduate studies in Lithography from Slade in London. Her work is part of many collections both nationally and internationally, and has also been exhibited worldwide. Naz teaches painting and printmaking at the Ottawa School of Art. Neera Huckvale (exhibition in Salon B) is a former student!

Mumtaz is my dad and Ahmed is my nephew. Every year for the past 34 years we all get together for the annual Rehman family spring fishing trip. The trip consists of great company, great food, and sometimes we even catch some fish. For you non-fisherfolk, that is a BIG brook trout!

Heba is a quadrilingual journalist with a special interest in conflict, development and the violation of human rights. She has reported from hot spots all over the world - Kenya, Sudan (I meant to ask her how she got expelled from there), Senegal and Chad. She is currently a producer for CBC Radio’s "The Current". Heba is an avid soccer player, a passionate traveler and a bit of a workaholic.

Having grown up in Montreal, I have often taken guests St. Joseph’s Oratory and observed people light candles in prayer. This photograph was taken at a Muslim Saint’s shrine in Lahore, Pakistan where I was struck by the similarity of the candle lighting ritual across religions.
